Shadow Temple

The Shadow Temple is the seventh dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It was originally intended to the be the last dungeon and can indeed be completed last. This is a very linear dungeon and Farore's Wind has minimal use here.

Speed guide

After entering the first door (the route towards the Hover Boots) cast Farore's Wind. Once you retrieve the Hover Boots, warp back and re-enter the room with the stone bird. Put the Hover Boots on!

The correct skull to point the rotating bird at is random. Use your Hover Boots to run to safety after each attempt.

In the room with the rotating scythes, get the rupees as follows:

  • Run to the right of the reapers to get the rupee to their right and the one at the far right.
  • Longshoot the target on the left and collect the one in mid-air.
  • Get the second rupee from near the reapers and the last one from the nearby alcove.
  • Then get the Small Key, then exit.

The fourth Big Skulltula in the passage with the Big Skulltulas and blades can be dodged if you run past it fast enough.

Ignore the Stalfos at the far end of the big room.

The next silver rupee puzzle can be solved as follows:

  • After landing, go right and collect the rupee furthest from the door you're trying to open.
  • Get the three near the middle (there's no need to bomb the Beamos, just run against it and you'll collect the rupee from where it's standing).
  • Lastly get the other lonely rupee. Your Hover Boots might prove to be a liability at this point.

The Stone Umbrella room can be optimised using the Stone Umbrella Shortcut.

Guide: Stone Umbrella Shortcut

There's a section with an invisible moving block which is actually very tricky indeed. Note that first of all there is a static invisible block which you CAN stand on while you pick your time.

Cast FW in the room with the invisible spikes and silver rupees, before going left into the room with the big skull. This saves the tedium of killing all the bats to escape it after retrieving the Small Key; you can just warp out!

In the room with the invisible Small Key chest there are some mummies which you can kill for magic if you need it.

Longshot the ladder instead of wasting time pulling the big block.

Take off your Hover Boots for the boat fight.

If you're fast you should be able to take on both Stalfoses in plenty of time to run to the front of the boat with your bow and wait for the bombs to come into range. If you're feeling brave, and you're handy with the bow, you can shoot the bombs FROM THE BOAT. Thus, as the bird head falls forwards and creates a bridge for you, you are carried all the way to the other end of the platform and the door you need to go through next, to the room with the invisible maze. This saves a small amount of running time. Be warned, however; if you're too slow off the mark shooting the bombs, you may find the boat sinks out from under you before you are restored control of Link, and you die. This is risky.

Go "left" in the room with the invisible maze, for the Small Key, then "straight across" for the Boss Key. Ignore the zombies in the Boss Key room.
