Ice Cavern

The Ice Cavern is the first mini-dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The Ice Cavern is pretty straightforward to optimise since warping using Farore's Wind while inside it is impossible - all you can do is warp to the entrance, which is pointless.

It is assumed that, during a speedrun, the only bottle you bother collecting is the forced bottle required before enter Jabu-Jabu's Belly. The time saved during the Ice Cavern by having a second bottle doesn't make up for the time required to get the Lon-Lon Ranch bottle or the Cucco-Lady bottle. However, you can get a "temp" bottle if you choose. When you're standing by the first blue flame, before you collect it, take out your bottle and swipe. Before the bottle contacts the flame, pause the game and switch your bottle with your Deku Nuts. Doing this correctly will collect a Blue Flame where before you had Deku Nuts. Use this extra bottle and your other bottle throughout the Ice Cavern to carry around Blue Fire in pairs. At any time after the Ice Cavern, you can return the second bottle to Deku Nuts by collecting or buying any amount of Deku Nuts.

The Silver Rupee pattern for the room with the spinning blades is easy to optimise; the room with the block-pushing is harder. Throughout, I shall assume that "forwards" is the direction you're facing on the way in and left, right and backwards assign themselves:

  1. First jump from the block to get the rupee ahead, then the rupee immediately beyond that.
  2. Push the block left, and climb off it to get another silver.
  3. Push it forwards towards the flame and climb for another rupee, then jump out and collect some Blue Fire.
  4. Push the block into the void.
  5. Push the block right this time, and CAREFULLY backflip onto the tiny post it stops at. Roll-attack on the spot to get some speed going as you jump for the silver rupee frozen in ice.
  6. Push the block back left and then back to the fire. (You need an extra Blue Fire to get through the red ice that blocks the final corridor to the Wolfos room.)
  7. Push the block right...
  8. ...then backwards (towards where it started)...
  9. then left to the ideal location for jumping to the next corridor.
