Ganon's Castle

From Speedrunwiki.com
Jump to navigationJump to search

Ganon's Castle is the final "dungeon" of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Although it does contain a Boss Key, it is not technically a full dungeon (or even a mini-dungeon) as it contains neither a dungeon map nor a compass (both of which would be largely superfluous anyway) and Farore's Wind will not work inside it.

Speed guide

There are two ways to do the six trials, one way saving much time by doing none of them or optomising all six trials.

Option 1

Go into the spirit barrier and do the Ganon Trial Skip

This consists of pushing the closest armos statue to the corner of the door, then jumpslashing between the door and it and finding your way back to the skull-faced door in the pre-loaded area

Tip:Practice finding your way back before actually doing it, hold z to go perfectly straight backwards or sideways. count how many side hops or backflips to get to it if necessary.

Option 2

Do the six barriers in an anticlockwise order - Forest Barrier first, Spirit Barrier last.

Always break the nearby pots for powerups before destroying each barrier pod thing.

In the first Forest Barrier room, use Din's Fire to light all the torches and kill the Wolfos at the same time. Ignore the chest. Shoot an arrow through any torch to light the furthest one. For the silver rupees, here's my route:

  • Use the Hover Boots to quickly collect the first rupee on the left before the fan starts up.
  • Then get rupee at the right-hand wall, between the fans.
  • Ignore the Beamos, run past its platform and get the rupee just below the exit.
  • Drop to the left, hit the switch, and Longshoot up to the next rupee.
  • Return to the exit and collect the final rupee when the fan stops.

In the Water Barrier room, don't forget to collect a second Blue Fire before leaving. Consider using Din's Fire on the two Freezards.

In the Fire Barrier room, go right first. Then get the rupee from the whirling fire platform, then jump over to the enormous block. The rest is obvious. When collecting the silver rupee from near where the gigantic silver/black block landed, you'll find that the Hover Boots (which you'll be wearing to stop the central shape from sinking into the lava) don't offer enough traction to get back onto solid land before the unstable platform where the rupee was sitting sinks into the lava. You'll need to switch back to the Kokiri Boots for this bit.

Take off your Hover Boots permanently after the Fire Barrier stuff is done. Hover Boots slow you down because of all the running on the spot you end up doing, and you won't be using them again.

In the first Light Barrier room, use the Hookshot to take out all the invisible enemies. Ignore all the chests but the middle one.

In the first Spirit Barrier room, don't bother moving anything or killing anything, just grab all the rupees, starting with the one on the right. In the second room, be sure to kill the fire slugs before messing with Bombchus (if you have none, you can spin-attack the switch to drop a chest full of them).

Boss guide: Ganondorf

Take direct routes through the burning rocks instead of skirting around them like Zelda does. Note, however, that every time you get hit, she stops moving and gasps at you, so be CAREFUL.

Be warned that if you get too far ahead of her in the last grey staircase she may lose track of you and STOP MOVING.

Ignore the final zombie; just roll past it fast enough and it won't see you.

A good escape time is 1 minutes, 18 seconds left on the clock. Sadly, this is not one of the sub-games which people compete for.
