The major item picked up in this dungeon was the Fairy Boomerang and you're definitely going to need to use it. This is also the first point in the game where you absolutely HAVE to use Z-targeting, so if you haven't already learned, you'd better. This battle is frantic and confusing, but not too hard - the first time I did it, simply Z-targeting and boomeranging everything in sight served quite well.

As soon as you enter the room, pull out a Deku Stick and do a jump-attack.  This can be done while moving towards Barinade before it begins attacking you. This makes the last phase of the battle much quicker.

To start with you have the electric shocks to deal with. Provided you keep moving at a high enough speed, most of these will miss you. They are signalled by a flash of light from the trumpet that is about to fire at you. However, the camera will probably swivel around to a position where you can't see Barinade itself, making the next bit tricky. You need to Z-target the tentacles connecting Barinade to the ceiling and hurl your Fairy Boomerang in that direction. They do not reattach themselves so you don't have to hurry (except in as much as you should always hurry in a speed run).
+
Immediately circle Barinade as you take out the three tentacles. With this preliminary out of the way, Barinade begins swirling his first set of five jellyfish. Don't bother taking out the jellies - performing five slashes has the same effect. Note that any sword attack will kill a single jellyfish, but use the Power Crouch Stab to avoid losing your saved jump-attack.  The gained speed is worth the hit you'll likely take from Barinade directly after the fifth hit.

Now Barinade is able to move, whirling its first row of jellyfish around it for protection as it chases you. While on the retreat from the deadly electric carousel, you have to turn around and aim a boomerang shot at Barinade's centre. This will stun the creature and cause the jellyfish to stop moving. (If you are very, very quick, you can do this BEFORE they start spinning.) Ignore the first wave of jellyfish and do as many jumping Deku Stick attacks as you can - this will cause the first wave of jellyfish to simply disappear.
+
Lock on and stay nearby as you throw your boomerang through the second set of five jellyfish to stun Barinade. This time hitting Barinade is not an option: you have to kill the jellies.  Pick a direction to travel around Barinade and take them out as you go. If you're fast, you can take out all five in one stun cycle.

For phase three the second row of four jellyfish will fan out to chase you, and now Barinade will be moving much faster and attempting to fry you with electric shocks at the same time. This makes turning around for long enough to draw a bead on its red lower middle becomes a dangerous affair. However, once you manage to stun Barinade, its belly is no longer exposed. That means you have no choice but to take out jellyfish. Barinade will soon recover to chase you, so repeat the stun-attack pattern until all the jellyfish are gone - but if you are VERY fast, you can take out all four in a single stun cycle.
+
Finally, Barinade is exposed and you can start whittling its 10 HP. Normally its sinks into the ground when it has 6 or 3 HP left. This means that a single Power Crouch Stab will send it below ground. Just stay close by with your boomerang ready to decrease the time before you hit it again.

Lastly, keep stunning Barinade and breaking all your remaining Deku Sticks over it until it dies.

Bio-Electric Anemone: Barinade is the third boss in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It dwells Inside Jabu-Jabu's Belly.

Speed strategy

As soon as you enter the room, pull out a Deku Stick and do a jump-attack. This can be done while moving towards Barinade before it begins attacking you. This makes the last phase of the battle much quicker.

Finally, Barinade is exposed and you can start whittling its 10 HP. Normally its sinks into the ground when it has 6 or 3 HP left. This means that a single Power Crouch Stab will send it below ground. Just stay close by with your boomerang ready to decrease the time before you hit it again.
