Alex is a former Mario Kart 64 world champ for both Non-Shortcut and Shortcut. He pioneered some strategies (notably Kalimari Desert) and many shortcuts, and has had several long-standing WRs. Most were shortcut WRs, and they have all fallen as the years went by. His most famous WR was CM NonSC flap, which despite being done with an inferior strat stood for more than 5 years. Some of his other long-standing records, such as LRSC 3lap and CMSC 3lap, were eventually beaten with new shortcut discoveries. Alex was the top "universal" (non-shortcut and shortcut combined) MK64 player for many years; he is still 3rd in [http://www.mariokart64.com/top100/universalARR.html Universal ARR] and 6th in [http://www.mariokart64.com/top100/universal.html Universal AF] despite hardly having played since 2001. Alex has never officially retired and has made some returns to try out new SCs.

At his peak he was the top Combined player for several consecutive years. In 2008 Alex joined the MKW page. He is unranked because he has only played 11 courses, and mostly played single laps. He briefly held a 3lap WR on 'Mushroom Mountain' after finding the extra trick to making the shortcut jump earlier to save a few seconds on each lap. At present, he still holds the MG lap WR at 13'331 -- a time that was 1 second ahead of anyone else when he got it -- and also holds the oldest site record (22'764 Peach Beach). Alex has held the lap record on all except 2 levels that he's played.

In addition to gaming, Alex has helped the community by creating the current front-end for the SMK, MKSC, MKDD, MKDS and MKW sites. He designed and maintains the database, made the update parser, site templates, styles and most of the graphics. Dictatorship of the MKDS and MKW sites, in particular, was assigned to [[Sean Sullivan]] and [[William Lacey]] (resp.), and the able pair have added many features beyond Alex's contributions that Alex probably likes to take credit for when, er, chatting up chicks. Yeah.

In more visible roles, Alex still updates the weekly MKDD news. He is also an admin on the forums, but rumour has it that he has other secret powers.

Alex Penev

Alex Penev is an all-round gamer and admin in the kart community. He was voted 'most popular' in the inaugural Karter Contest (2004), came runner-up in the second edition (2006), and won again in the third contest (2008).

A former Mario Kart 64 world champion on both the Non-Shortcut and Shortcut rankings, Alex never officially retired despite having been inactive since 2001. At his peak he was the top Combined player for several consecutive years. He is perhaps best known for his shortcut skills, strategy optimisations, and for holding several particularly long-standing records---most notably CM flap, which stood for 5 years, and the LR and CM shortcuts, which were eventually beaten with newly discovered shortcuts.

Alex was briefly champion in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in early 2004 and held the lead for 4 months. He retired from the game in July 2004 but remained involved with the site ever since then for administrative duties. He also briefly competed in Mario Kart Wii in 2008, near the end of the game's first year of competition, where he played only a dozen tracks but improved the lap records on most and temporarily held the course record on MG after finding and revealing a major improvement to the shortcut.

Outside the Mario Kart series, Alex is a veteran of N64HS and Cyberscore. He has held records in many games in the Mario series, Zelda series, Donkey Kong series and Pokémon Snap. Outside of high-score competition, Alex has given back to the community by creating the backends and front-ends for several of the websites. In more current roles, he is a site and forum admin, but rumour has it that he has other secret powers.

Personal quotes include "chown -R me ~you/base*" (all your base are belong to me), and "...no queue jumping" (in response to "I want your babies!").
