Speedrun
The Speed Demos Archive hosts Mega Man X competition. The current proven World Record for a complete-game MMX speedrun is 34 minutes and 9 seconds, achieved by Freddy Andersson on March 18th, 2007. He also set the record for fastest 100% completion, 39 minutes and 41 seconds, on June 7th, 2006.
Speed Run Strategies
The low percent speedrun route has gone way too long unchanged. Recent TASs use a new route, one that beats Boomer Kuwanger after Chill Penguin. There are several reasons for this:
-The time loss on Boomer Kuwanger's stage without Homing Torpedo and the other weapons is minimal. A fully charged buster shot does three points of damage to Boomer Kuwanger, and it is not as hard as one might think to hit him in between teleports.
-The Storm Eagle fight goes signficantly faster because of the Chameleon Sting. Also, it takes considerably less luck to kill him without having him fly at you.
-The tank fights in the Launch Octopus stage go a little faster with the Chameleon Sting.
-The player has the option of cutting off Launch Octopus's arms if they aren't feeling lucky.
