Single-segment run

A single-segment run is a speedrun or other videogaming record attempt which is completed entirely in a single sitting. Contrast this with a segmented run.

The vast majority of videogaming world records fall into this category, as most videogaming challenges are reasonably short (for example, a typical level of Perfect Dark is less than four minutes long).

However, there are obvious practical limitations on the maximum length a single-segment run can have. Games of extreme length often give opportunities for players to eat and drink while playing, but it is rarer to have breaks in the action long enough to visit the lavatory and not lose any time - in which case time must be lost by pausing the game or simply leaving it running unattended. For this reason, challenges expected to last more than (say) five hours are often segmented for the sake of the player's sanity.
