Sonic the Hedgehog is an Action/Platformer released in June of 1991 by Sega for the Sega Genesis. It should not be confused with the 2007 "next generation" Sonic game with the same title. The series continued with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Speed Runs
The Speed Demos Archive hosts Sonic the Hedgehog competition. The current proven World Record for a complete-game Sonic speedrun on the European version is 18 minutes and 9 seconds, achieved by Mike McKenzie on November 17th, 2006.
