On Saturday, [[March 31]], [[1987]], at 1:14 PM PDT, Damiani suffered a severe stroke at his apartment in San Francisco, California. His girlfriend, Janine Drescher, witnessed the event. Reportedly, Damiani pointed to his head just before the attack and whispered, "Hey. Look. Listen." It was later determined that a blood clot that had formed in his upper heart as a result of his heart condition broke off and traveled to his brain. He was rushed by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital. For four hours, he was alert, but unable to speak or to move his right arm or leg. Doctors initially said his stroke was minor, but the damage to the brain caused it to swell inside the skull, called cerebral edema, which resulted in his condition worsening over the next few hours. On the evening of [[March 31]], Damiani slipped into a coma before dying at 11:13 PM PDT.

Drescher commented that he had complained for a week prior that he had been having trouble remembering parts of his video games. "He usually can do the Catfish's Maw in about 3:55, but he took so long to find the first Small Key I went to the bathroom. Must have taken nine or ten." Damiani's friends and family will be holding a private funeral next week. CBS 5 News reported his mother was proud that he spent his later years doing what he loved. "Michael really achieved a lot in his life. He found a way to make money playing Zelda on those Game Boy things. What kid his age hasn't dreamed of that?"
