Time travel and the manipulation of time is a major theme of Majora's Mask. In particular, the game has its own clock, which naturally gives rise to two ways of timing a speed run - according to the game clock, and using real time.

Ordinarily you have to reset the clock back to the start of Day One at least every 72 game hours. This is what the game expects you to do, at least, and you have to do it at least once because you don't recover your Ocarina until almost the end of Day Three. However, it IS just about possible to beat the ENTIRE rest of the game in the course of the next three-day cycle, without going back in time.

The best second-cycle completion, judged by the time shown on the game clock when the player reaches the entrance to the Clock Tower having completed all four dungeons, is [http://speeddemosarchive.com/MajorasMask.html#6dc 8:32pm on Day Two], achieved by [[Peter Branam-Lefkove]] on April 18, 2004. (The Clock Tower itself does not open up until midnight on Day Three, regardless of circumstances.)
