Once you're happy with the boat's position, leave it there and climb the rope to Piantissimo (or wall kick in the crevice). Face the camera towards the boxing glove, and zoom in. Jump onto the ledge and talk to the purple man. When the race begin, wait a split second for the camera to realign itself, hold forward (i.e. towards the boxing glove) and press A+B at the same time to do a dive. You should land onto the tiny narrow ledge. As you land, press A to flip out of your dive and land on the boxing glove's ledge. Do a quick A+B dive to get hit by the glove. Wheeeeeee....

If you hit the boat as you land, Mario should bounce off it and land much further up into the water. This saves much precious time that would be otherwise spend in swimming. Quickly turn yourself to face the flag, and "swim" towards the shore. Once you reach the short, A+B flip as many times as necessary to reach the flag.

One hint about swimming... the fastest way to swim is to jump out of the water (rapidly tap A a few times) and dive. Don't touch the joystick when you're tapping A to leave the water, but hold forward on the joystick when you're diving. This should give you more horizontal motion when you're diving. If you touch the joystick while pressing A, you'll swim in that direction rather than jump out. Anyway, if you learn how to do this trick properly, the "swim" from the landing area to the shore requires 3 jump-dives. The WR involves an extra little trick with the bouncy platform, to cut down on a little bit of swimming.

Now about swimming - the fastest way to move across water unaided is to jump out (vertically) and dive forward (horizontally). Don't touch the joystick when you're tapping A to jump out, otherwise Mario will swim and not jump. But definitely hold the joystick full tilt when performing the dive, as it will carry you further through the air. Anyway, if you learn how to do this trick properly, the "swim" from the landing area to the shore requires 3 jump-dives.

NB. It's possible to land on the circular platform instead of in the water when you get hit by the glove. To do this, you must not A+B dive into the glove, but only A+A+A dive. Hitting the platform has the same effect as hitting the boat (you bounce off it and land further away). If you position the boat to where you land from the platform bounce, you can perform a spin flop and land even further up into the water. This strategy is largely untested, because it's hard to do. [[Daniel Viebrock]] reported that you do not get a double-bounce effect from the boat if your first bounce was from the platform. Almost all top players use the boat for their first bounce.

NB. The WR involves an extra little trick with the bouncy platform, to cut down on an extra swimming stroke. Without this trick, it's still easily possible to get 12'8, or probably better.
