To do anything at all on this challenge, you need to learn about <b>spam sprays</b>. You probably know that if you hold down R and press A, Mario backflips with a large burst of water. The same thing works if Mario is already in mid-air. Try it out - jump in the air and press A and R at the same time. If done correctly, Mario will spray a large burst of water in all directions ahead of him. This is the most efficient cleaning technique (faster than barrels, considering the time needed to pick them up), and is the key to doing well in this challenge. You can press A+R together several times in a single jump to perform several spam sprays before you hit the ground again.
Once you can do this, the rest involves a route. Alex's preferred route is to begin the race with a back flip and spam 3 or 4 sprays and hopefully clear the goop to the left of the hotelier, as well as some of the goop on top of the first ring in the pavement. As you land, turn right and cut across the beach, cleaning goop on the beach and trying to jump up and spamming some water onto the second tier. As you reach the second pavement ring, jump from the grass onto the bricks. If you've been spamming 2 sprays per jump or more, you'll be out of water - drop into the pool in the middle of the second ring. Spam into the centre of the tier, and turn around to clean the back-side of the second ring. Then cut across along the back of the goopy area to the first ring again (the middle should already be clean). All that's left is the first ring, which you hopefully clean a little during the first few seconds of the challenge. Simply face the hotelier, run towards the first ring, and spam spray like a maniac. Visibility should be low and the location and quantity of remaining goop is completely up to chance - spam sprays are fairly random in regards to what they clean at longer distances, and most of the left ring is cleaned from afar during the first and middle sections of the race. If you're lucky, only a few sprays will be enough to stop the timer.
